KaylaClarke.art Hi, I’m Kayla Clarke — a charcoal and textile mixed‑media artist, blending realism and surrealism, with a touch of whimsy.

I try to make each piece feel alive, tactile, and a little bit magical.

This evening I’m heading out to the Opening Night of the Brookfield Show Art Competition. I’ve entered 'Sunset Feathers' and 'Softly Perched'. It’s my first time entering this show, so I’m really excited to experience something new and meet some new people.

Writing about the inspiration behind my bird artwork yesterday made me realise it’s been 12 months since I created my very first yarn bird. Seeing the progress side by side really surprises me — my techniques have evolved so much in a year. It makes me excited to imagine what I’ll be creating in another 12 months.

Oh my goodness, here I am again 😬 I could answer the question so differently now, not being put on the spot.

My birds have evolved from a unit of work I did in grade 12, where I did an artist study on Del Kathryn Barton. Part of the unit was creating an experimental piece using inspiration from our chosen artist. Del Kathryn Barton's work is a little weird with lots of symbolism and she uses lots of texture. I love texture and it is something I like to bring into all my artwork. Birds often featured in her artwork, and it was these two elements I chose to concentrate on. I will post my experimental piece in the comments if you would like to check it out. I sold that artwork at the Boonah Show, where I was told there was a lot of interest from the public.

Since then, I have been refining my skills, while trying my hand at different animals, like chickens, dogs, frogs and a few other new things in the pipeline. So, keep an eye out. If you have any ideas of what I could create next, drop your suggestions in the comments for me to consider. While I enjoy creating things I love, and birds feel natural to me, I am always up for trying something different.

So there you go, I am a huge chicken lover and I love all birds but I was never going to be able to tell that story on radio feeling as nervous as I was. ☺️

It’s been nonstop since the Ipswich Show, and it doesn’t look like things are slowing down anytime soon. This piece isn’t quite ready for a full reveal yet, but here’s a little sneak peek. I’m really happy with how it’s coming together.

I’ve had the best day today!! I wrapped up the Ipswich Show, had my first radio interview with West Bremer Radio, and then bumped into Margie Nightingale MP at the op‑shop. She remembered me from the Inala Art Gallery exhibition and was so warm and encouraging. She even offered to help me get my name out there. I'm feeling incredibly grateful and excited for what's to come!

I had an interview today with Glen Smith and Bradley Clarke from West Bremer Radio, along with artist Rebekah Oliver, chatting about the Ipswich Show art competition. I was a little terrified — my first time doing anything like this, but the guys made it so much fun. I’m looking forward to hearing how it turned out.

While collecting my artwork from the Ipswich Show this morning, I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely buyers of 'Blushing Beauty'. It made my day to hear how much they love the piece. I cherish these moments — it’s so special knowing where a piece’s forever home will be. Was lovely meeting you both.
