Entertainers On Australian Stages

Entertainers On Australian Stages Photos taken by Deb Mayes, used here to promote upcoming events and provide retrospective flashbacks. My name is Deb Mayes.

I have been a devoted supporter of the Australian Arts & Entertainment Industry for almost as long as I can remember. In the time between 1973 and the present day I have amassed an incredible collection of photos taken at concerts and other industry events. Many thousands were taken on 35mm film and are slowly being digitised and restored to be shared here in a series of retrospective flashbacks.

My taste in music/entertainment is incredibly varied and covers everything from country music to rock and musical theatre/cabaret. It is my intention with this page to draw attention to upcoming events happening on Australian stages that might have an artist involved who I have previously photographed. The hope being that I might manage to encourage a few more people to attend an event they might otherwise have missed.

STARS band plays Easts Leagues Club Brisbane - 1979.
Getting photos of drummers isn't always the easiest thing, but fortunately I managed to get this one of JOHN JAMES HACKETT at a concert by country rock band STARS at Easts Leagues Club in Brisbane back in 1979.

Easts Leagues Club was a great venue in the suburb of Coorparoo in Brisbane. Back in the 1970s and early 1980s it was where I could often be found on Sunday nights. So many of the great Aussie bands played there and much of the time the price of admission was just $4.00. Acts that I saw there were Rose Tattoo, Flowers (pre Icehouse), Supernaut, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Dragon, Ted Mulry Gang, Air Supply, Matt Taylor, Finch/Contraband, Jeff St. John, Skyhooks, Dave Warner, Stars (w/Mick Pealing), Cold Chisel, The Sports, Renee Geyer, Russell Morris, The Angels, The Aliens, Jimmy & The Boys, Mondo Rock (w/Ross Wilson), The Reels, The Bishops (w/Dave Tice), Hello Sailor, Doug Parkinson, Australian Crawl, Keays (Jim Keays Band), Mr. Meaner, Dallimore, The Radiators, Christie Allen, Mi-S*x, Mother Goose, Midnight Oil, 42nd Street, The Boys, Swanee, Wendy & The Rockets (w/Wendy Stapleton), The Party Girls, Deckchairs Overboard, Sitting Pretty, On Edge, Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls, Do Re Mi (w/Deborah Conway), Atomic Bikini, Crib S*x, and Big Pig.

These days MICK PEALING has a 'side gig' as a radio program presenter every Thursday morning, 7-9 am on 96.5 Inner FM. It's a great show with a fabulous selection of music, most of which is decided upon by listener requests. You can stream the show live online via www.innerfm.org.au but each show is also retained on the website as a podcast for those who wish to listen at a later time.

You can delve into the history of Stars on the Facebook group Mick Pealing & STARS. https://www.facebook.com/groups/241363955987426

Happy Birthday STEVIE NICKS.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States on May 26th, 1948, Stevie is turning 77 years old this year (2026).

Stevie has toured Australia many times both as a solo artist and with the band FLEETWOOD MAC. This photo comes from 1980 when I saw her perform with the band at Festival Hall in Brisbane. It's a little on the blurry side but I love the happiness on her face in this shot.

The support act for this concert was Australian pop entertainer, John Paul Young.

FLASHBACK to May 17th, 2024. Back to the good old days when THE ZOO in Fortitude Valley was still putting bands on, and back to this night in particular when I saw a Tasmanian band called THE BAD DAD ORCHESTRA. They were on their way to play at the Gympie Muster but managed to slip this show in as they passed through.

On the bill that night were:
The Steele Syndicate
The Bad Dad Orchestra
Cheap Fakes

These days the Zoo might only be living on in our memories but The Bad Dad Orchestra are still playing down in Tassie if you're ever in that area. Maybe they'll venture up to Queensland again in the future. You never know.

THE BAD DAD ORCHESTRA:
Jimi Steele - Lead Vocals
Carl Treasure - Guitar/Vocals
Luke Young - Drums
Levi Abbott - Keys
Lee Mallinson - Guitar
Vince Walker - Bass Guitar
Chris Bonner - Trombone
Andrew Sulzberger - Trumpet
Carl Bulow - Tenor Sax

The Zoo have left their page open for anyone wanting to relive the memories. https://www.facebook.com/thezoo.bne

DAY WE RAN were just one of the acts who performed for BRUNSWICK STREET LIVE in Fortitude Valley on Friday night. This free music event was predominantly set up on a stage in the Brunswick Street Mall but in addition to that there were other acts playing at RG's and Blutes as well between 4pm and 10pm.

As a 4-piece outfit DAY WE RAN is mostly comprised of 3 brothers on guitars (Matthew, Daniel & Michael Lough) with some great collaboration from drummer Tone Cullen. I'm pretty sure this picture has caught MICHAEL LOUGH during their appearance in the Valley.

They have already played at many overseas venues and are headed off soon to North America, the UK and Ireland for dates at various venues through July/August/Sept 2026.

They leave behind a stack of fans, many of whom were at the Brunswick Street Mall on Friday night singing along to their songs, but I'm sure that absence will only make the heart grow fonder for them and they'll get an even bigger reception when they return.

Matthew Lough - Lead vocals and guitars
Daniel Lough - Bass guitar and vocals
Michael Lough - Acoustic guitar and vocals
Tone Cullen - Drums

Blutes in Fortitude Valley was the venue for LOS HOUSEPLANTS on Friday night when they performed as part of the annual BRUNSWICK STREET LIVE music event.

I managed to catch most of their set and really enjoyed their energy.

I think this photo of lead singer BLAKE HADLEY helps to illustrate that energy.

If you want to know the cause of all the merriment you see here, you'll just have to get yourself a ticket to see SIDE BY SIDE WITH SONDHEIM at the Brisbane Powerhouse before it closes tomorrow night. There are still a few seats to be had for both the Saturday matinee and evening performances if you follow the ticketing link below without delay. It's very important to me that you see these talented people, so please get there if you can.

I think it goes without saying that any fan of Stephen Sondheim musicals will love this show. It's got tons of the most popular Sondheim songs, as well as a few lesser-known, but equally impressive, numbers.

This photo shows ERICA WILD and JAMES SHAW performing a fabulous duet which any Sondheim fan is sure to recognise within the first few notes.

SIDE BY SIDE WITH SONDHEIM is being produced by A Night At The Musicals Inc., an independent professional theatre company specialising in staged-concert musical theatre productions. It is not to be missed.
