Anniversary of the First Councillors Conference

On 23 August 1937, leaders from 14 communities gathered on Masig. The First Inter Islander Councillors Conference spearheaded the end to unpopular curfews. It brought in a new era of Torres Strait representation and governance.

This is a legacy that is still shaping the Torres Strait – or Zenadth Kes – today. We see it reflected in Malungu Yangu Wakay or what we commonly know as the Masig Statement.

While we celebrate this anniversary, we should remember what preceded it, the 1936 Torres Strait Island Maritime Strike.

And we should know what followed it in 1939 – the introduction of the Torres Strait Islanders Act 1939 (TSI Act). This set of new Queensland laws formalised greater self-governance in the Torres Strait.

Today, we celebrate and recognise these leaders, whose vision continues to guide and inspire the Torres Strait.

Today marks the anniversary of the first formal council meeting held at Masig (Yorke Island) on 23 August 1937, when Torres Strait Islanders gathered to establish a formal voice for their communities. 🤝

This day is recognised annually as a gazetted holiday across the Torres Strait Island Regional Council area. 🌺

It was a bit of a quiet week in the office this week.
I joined Alma Street C and K Early Learning for an afternoon workshop, where I delivered on The Culturally Responsive Educator. This was a 2-hour online workshop that I facilitated on Tuesday afternoon. It's always great to work with centres that are looking to expand on their learning.
The rest of the week was spent on planing projects and lining up workshops over the next 6 months. I'm so excited as there are a couple of bigger projects for Zeyawgub coming out mid 2027, so I'm trying to line everything to work for my small business and my little family.

With August 23 quickly approaching, I thought it was a good time to put up this post.

Our strong, Torres Strait Islander Leaders fought against the oppressive legislation that crept into every aspect of their lives. By speaking up and calling for our voices to be heard, many changes were made to legislation and restrictive practices.
