ππ΄ What does it mean to see your culture reflected on a bookshelf?
For Torres Strait Islander father and son duo Michael and Elliott Passi, it means everything.
Growing up, Elliott loved reading creation stories but rarely saw stories from the Torres Strait represented. Now, alongside his father Michael, they've changed that with their book, 'Geigi, The Stubborn Boy.'
The book is a retelling of an ancestral Torres Strait Islander story passed down through generations.
"I wanted to see stories from our community on the shelf," Michael Passi told Saturday Brekky host Jess Naunton.
More than a children's book, it's a celebration of culture, identity, family and the timeless wisdom of Elders.
"It's about ensuring the next generation can pick up a book and see themselves, their stories and their heritage reflected in its pages," he said.
πThe Townsville launch of Geigi, The Stubborn Boy will be held at Riverway Library on June 29 from 10am.
