Ahh, auditions… the bane of every musician. We’ve all got that one unforgettable audition story—whether it happened to us or we heard it from a friend, colleague, or teacher. That’s why I’m so excited to be hosting the Classical Singer Sundays Audition Season concert this Sunday.
It’s a fantastic opportunity for young, emerging, and professional singers here in Adelaide to share their audition repertoire—and for some of us (myself included), even have a re-do of a bad audition experience.
It's looking like a great program and, most importantly, a really enjoyable afternoon. I’d love to see you there!
🎵Introducing your host for March - Fiona McArdle 🎵
It may be a surprise to some, but Fiona is not on the committee for Classical Singer Sundays!
That being said, she is very excited to host this session; especially meeting the first-time singers and hearing everyone's audition stories.
Fiona McArdle is an accomplished mezzo-soprano recognised for her versatility and depth of expression across opera, concert, and oratorio repertoire.
Fiona made her professional debut with State Opera South Australia in 2017, appearing as La Ciesca in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. Recent roles with the company include the Minskwoman in Flight, Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Cousin H**e in H.M.S. Pinafore, and Miss Jessel in Turn of the Screw. She has also worked with the Australian touring company Co-Opera, including touring as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte.
Internationally, Fiona has sung with Pittsburgh Festival Opera and Symphony New Hampshire, appearing in The Silent Woman, Agrippina, and Wagner’s The Essential Ring. In 2019, Fiona made her UK debut as Mimì in La Bohème with Hampstead Garden Opera in London.
Fiona has been featured in concert performances such as Accent on the 20th Century with Adelaide Hills Chamber Players and Songs for a Muse with State Opera South Australia. She is also an experienced oratorio soloist, having performed in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria.
Fiona continues to champion both traditional and contemporary repertoire. She is currently completing a PhD thesis at the University of Adelaide focused on highlighting 21st-century art song compositions by Australian women composers, acknowledging their significant contributions to Australia's classical music landscape.
Upcoming highlights for Fiona this year include performing with MAGPIE Artsong in Waltzes of Love as part of the Elder Lunchtime Concert Series, and the role of Mercédès in State Opera South Australia’s production of Carmen.
We would love to see you there!
