Contemporary Art finds its Home
It’s three years since the South Eastern Contemporary Art Network (SECAN) launched a major members’ exhibition and 2018 sees them show their work at their very own art space, Gate 6 Gallery.
“We are so excited to have a proper gallery with professional lighting and the proper hanging gear” says Gate 6 Gallery curator Annette Slattery. “It lifts the artworks and makes it so much more enjoyable to look at the art.”
Gate 6 Gallery is positioned in picturesque Akoonah Park in Berwick. “It was just a shed when we first moved in and we got together and cleaned it and painted it white” says Slattery. “We had a few shows there when it was still in its ‘shed-state’, then last year Casey Council approached us about refurbishing it.”
Founded in February 2013 by Gembrook artist Sue Jarvis, SECAN is group of contemporary artists who come together to discuss their work. Initially representing the shires of Cardinia and Casey, the group has expanded to include many shires south east of Melbourne. Over the five years since its inception the group has supported community art projects throughout the area such as Art in the Garden, Apple Harvest, Art Show Pakenham and Cudgewa Blues. In 2015 the group volunteered to paint an ANZAC themed shipping container for Pakenham Agricultural show and SECAN artists regularly volunteer at Bunjil Place teaching art.
SECAN includes many luminary local artists such as Andrea Hopgood, Geoff Sargent and Janine Good. The members of SECAN, between them, cover a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, mosaics, textiles, scratchboard, assemblage, collage, digital art, drawing, photography, installation, fibre arts, printmaking and ceramics.
This exhibition will be a showcase of some of the artists’ favourite pieces, old and new, demonstrating the variety of themes, mediums and styles encompassed by this diverse and exciting group of contemporary artists.
