City gigs can look busy on paper.

More bars. More stages. More chances to play.

But there’s also more musicians chasing the same rooms — which usually means lower pay, tougher competition, and a faster road to burnout.

Regional gigs are different.

Less noise. Better community. More chance the room actually cares that you showed up.

And if you do the maths right, regional runs can be the thing that keeps you touring.

The musicians who last aren’t always the ones playing the biggest cities.

They’re the ones who figured out where the numbers actually work.

🎉 Gig Trail Booking Tip – New Year Edition 🎸

January is prime time for bookings — but here’s the trick:
Start warm, not wide.

Instead of blasting cold emails, follow up with venues you already know.
A simple “Happy New Year — got any dates you’re filling?” goes a long way while calendars are still open.

To kick the year off, we’re running 25% off The Gig Trail until the end of January.

Gig Tip 💵
Nothing’s worse than realizing you’re $50 short halfway home.
Count it right there with the person who pays you.
Clear, simple, no weird vibes later.

🎤 Gig Tip – Sound techs can be hit or miss… but so can musicians. Know the sound you’re chasing and communicate it clearly. Come from a place of knowledge, not guesswork, and you’ll get the best out of the person behind the desk (and they’ll get the best out of you).

🎤 Gig Tip : The Soundcheck Sandwich 🥪

Always soundcheck in reverse order—start with the last song of your set. Why? Because by the time you hit that finale, the room’s full and the mix is live-tested and dialled in.

Your big closer deserves big clarity. Don’t let it get lost in the soup. 🎶

Built on beer money & tour grit.

🚨 Gig Booking Tip from the Road 🚨
The one email I didn't send...

After years of touring Australia, I thought I had this booking thing nailed. But this is my first tour in Europe — and today was a sharp reminder of how crucial communication is.

We had a venue confirm a show. I followed up with a "Thanks, stoked to play!" email, sent the poster, and started promoting. But what I didn’t notice... was that they never replied again. No final confirmation. No event listing. Nothing.

Fast-forward to this week — three days out — I check their site and... they're shut for summer holidays. Gig’s off. 😬

It stings, but it’s a classic lesson:
✅ Always follow up one last time — even if the gig seems locked in.
That one “Just checking we’re still good for [date]?” email can save you a cancelled show and a whole lot of stress.

Now I’m going back through my whole tour calendar re-confirming gigs. Better late than never!

📌 TIP: Set a reminder to reconfirm every show 2 weeks out — especially when dealing with different countries, languages, and booking cultures. It might just save your butt.

🎸 Gig Trail Tip – Don’t Just Pitch, Offer a Solution 🎯
When you're reaching out to venues, don’t just ask for a gig—solve a problem. Got an empty Friday night? Say you can fill it. Got a crowd that loves roots, blues or country? Say your show is built for that vibe. Venue bookers are busy—make it easy for them to say yes.
✅ Offer specific dates
✅ Mention your style
✅ Link your music
✅ And always ask if they have a PA or accommodation available

🎸 Welcome to The Gig Trail! 🎤
With Julian James

Hey legends — welcome to The Gig Trail, a space for independent musos navigating the highs, lows, and hustle of booking your own gigs.

I’m Julian James — a touring singer-songwriter who’s spent the past 13+ years playing thousands of shows across Australia, from rowdy pubs to packed festivals and everything in between. I’ve booked my own gigs, slept in vans, sold merch out the boot, and learned (mostly the hard way) what it takes to build a music career from the ground up.

That’s what this space is about — sharing real tips, road stories, booking hacks, and support for musos doing it all themselves.

🛣️ Expect trail tales, DIY resources, community wisdom, and a few laughs along the way.
🎶 Ask questions, share your gigs, connect with others, and be part of a scene that lifts each other up.

📘 Just launched:
"Musicians Guide to Booking & Touring Australia" – A hands-on guide to help you book more shows, tour smarter, and build your live career. Grab the sampler or full version at www.thegigtrail.com

This isn’t just a page —we are hoping to build a community.
Let’s hit the road together.
