✨NEURODIVERSITY✨At Activity & Play Therapy, we recognise that neurodivergence is not a deficit, but a difference in how a person experiences and interacts with the world. Neurodivergent individuals such as those with Autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, learning disabilities, and other neurological variations often thrive in environments that are flexible, creative, and responsive to their unique ways of thinking, feeling, and communicating.

SUPPORT WORK AVAILABLE 🀝

At Activity & Play Therapy, we truly understand the unique and often immense demands placed upon parents, carers, and families who are navigating life alongside a neurodivergent child, young person, or aged individual. The dedication, love, and consistent support you provide day in and day out can be incredibly rewarding, yet it can also lead to a profound sense of exhaustion the weight of constant advocacy, understanding different communication styles, navigating sensory sensitivities, and ensuring their needs are met can feel all consuming.

We recognise that juggling these responsibilities on top of everyday life work, other family members, personal well-being can push you to your limits. The emotional, mental, and physical toll can accumulate, leading to what is often referred to as burnout. This isn't a sign of weakness; it's a natural consequence of giving so much of yourself. It can manifest in feeling overwhelmed, depleted, irritable, less patient, or even a sense of detachment.

Please know, deeply and truly, that you are not alone in this journey. Many families walk a similar path, facing comparable challenges and experiencing similar feelings of fatigue and overwhelm. It takes extraordinary strength and resilience to provide the consistent support your loved one needs, and it's okay to acknowledge that this requires support for you too. Recognising your own needs is not selfish; it's essential for your well-being and your ability to continue providing the best possible care.

We're Here to Help.

Our support workers are more than just helping hands. They are carefully chosen individuals who undergo thorough assessments to ensure they have the expertise and training needed to best support your specific needs.

Your Peace of Mind is Our Priority:

WWCC, NDIS Clearance, and Police Checks: Every single one of our support workers holds current Working With Children Checks, NDIS Worker Screening Clearance, and Police Checks.
Experienced and Trained: We don't just hire anyone. We meticulously evaluate each support worker's experience and ensure they have the right skills and understanding to provide quality care.
Carefully Matched: We take the time to understand your individual circumstances and carefully match our support workers to your family and the specific environment, ensuring a comfortable and supportive fit for everyone.
You don't have to navigate this journey alone. Activity & Play Therapy is here to provide the reliable and trustworthy support you deserve. 🌱

Practitioner certified in Neurodiversity Affirming Therapy with Autism & ADHD in children, young people, and across the lifespan

Neurodiversity Practice Guidelines:

Central and Non-Negotiable
Focus on Acceptance and Value
Respect for Identity
Prioritising Lived Experience
Avoiding Harmful Practices
Integration with Trauma Informed Practice
Requirement of Practitioner Knowledge
Guiding Goal Setting
Emerging Standard for ADHD

It's all about understanding and accepting that everyone's brain works differently. Instead of trying to "fix" autism or ADHD, we're going to focus on respecting how each kid and young person sees the world and helping them in a way that feels right for them.

It's like saying, "Your way of being is okay, and we're going to support you for who you are." We're not going to try to make them act "normal" if that feels uncomfortable or wrong for them.

These guidelines really push us to listen to autistic and ADHD people themselves to understand what helps and what doesn't. We need to know what they prefer and what makes them feel good.

Things like forcing kids to make eye contact if it makes them stressed? That's probably going to stop. Trying to make them be super "social" in a way that feels unnatural? We'll be thinking twice about that too.

The big idea is to value their unique strengths and help them learn and grow in a way that fits them, not the other way around. It's about building them up and making sure they feel good about who they are.

So, for me, the future means learning more about neurodiversity, listening really well, and making sure my support helps children and young people thrive as the awesome individuals they are. It's a much more positive and empowering way to think about things.

Children's biological, psychological, neurological and social wellness can be impacted by trauma. Our trauma informed approach to early learning includes developing a thorough understanding of the ways trauma impacts developmentally on children, and recognising symptoms of trauma.

Activity & Play Therapy acknowledges that our trauma informed practice prioritises physical, emotional, and psychological safety for all involved including children, individuals, parents, carers, families, and communities across the lifespan. This approach also respects diverse cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, intersecting identities, abilities, and connections to the broader community.
