Workshop — Join local artist and arts educator April Hague for a beginner-friendly portrait illustration workshop designed for anyone who wants to build confidence in drawing faces and working with mixed media.
April Hague is a multi-disciplinary local artist and arts educator specialising in portraiture, figurative work and mural production. April is the director of Life Drawing Mount Gambier and has exhibited throughout the Limestone Coast and across South Australia.

Saturday 7 March, 10:00am – 1:00pm
$50 full price | $25 concession

The session begins with a guided tour through two exhibitions:
National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition
Bound In Light: Portrait exhibition by Maurizio Cigognetti
You’ll then move into practical studio time, where April will introduce foundational portrait drawing techniques and demonstrate how to combine mediums to develop a finished mixed-media portrait artwork.

I moved from the big smoke of Adelaide to the Blue Lake city in January 1997. This was taken on perhaps the first day here. I had just accepted a job with the Education Department as an Art teacher at Allendale East Area School as a graduate at the age of 21 ☺️ I had never been to the Mount and had to ask the person on the phone where it was and how long it would take to get there. I didnt know a soul.

I remained at AEAS for the next few decades, largely because every year brought change, opportunity and growth. I always worked with supportive Principals (including Rowena, Kylie, Bob and Beth) which made things dynamic for much of the time. I made many lifelong friends and fondly remember many students. The Rock Eisteddods and various school
Musicals I helped plan are some of my favourite memories.

I have now resigned from the department and have started working for the Adelaide University in a lecturer role which I love. New opportunities on the horizon including starting my Masters of Education in 2026 which I am really looking forward to. I’m grateful to be teaching our future teachers.

Here’s to the next 30 or so years in the Mount being even better. 🥂

Had some fun down at Dip & Clip Dog Spa this week, dressing up their window for Christmas with some hand-drawn artwork. A few festive puppy dogs did the trick! 🐶 🎄 🦴
