After a long period of consideration and discussion,
we finally decided to feature Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser as one of the Jokers in the Secrets Session Royal Collector’s Edition Playing Cards.
Hofzinser is widely regarded as
“The Father of Modern Card Magic,”
and one of the very first magicians to bring magic into elegant European salons and high society.
He was far more than a magician.
He fundamentally redefined the artistic language of card magic.
His legendary Rising Card apparatus became one of the earliest mechanical inspirations behind the modern “Any Card Rising” effect — a concept that continues to influence card magic to this day.
In this Joker design,
we combined Hofzinser with Vienna’s iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the background.
Because Vienna was not only his city,
but also a place deeply connected to elegance, mystery, art, and intellectual culture.
Remarkably, Vienna even has a street named after Hofzinser —an honor rarely granted to magicians anywhere in the world.
This is more than just a Joker card.
It is a tribute to the golden age of European magic.
