About the Orchestra

Orchestra Aleksandar is the first ensemble in Vienna’s history to offe

r an inclusive, gender-free, and nationality-free space for learning and experiencing traditional Macedonian and Balkan music. Uniquely, it is the only orchestra of its kind in Europe to exist outside of Macedonia’s borders, making it a rare and pioneering initiative in the field of traditional music. The Name

The name "Aleksandar" derives from Aleksandar III (The Great), the most famous historical figure from Macedonia—often called the first cosmopolitan. It was chosen through community feedback, reflecting the orchestra’s commitment to shared cultural heritage and musical exchange. Mission & Vision

Orchestra Aleksandar is committed to researching, preserving, and passing on the rich traditions of Macedonian and Balkan music and dance. Beyond their artistic and scientific value, traditional instruments and dances are seen as powerful tools for healing, social connection, and cultural understanding. The orchestra stands against nationalism and commercial motives, embracing music and dance as a universal language of unity, empowerment, and emotional expression. Music belongs to everyone—beyond borders, beyond gender, beyond labels.
