About the Orchestra
Orchestra Aleksandar is a Vienna-based ensemble dedicated to the study, performance, and transmission of traditional Macedonian a
nd Balkan music and dance. Founded as an open and inclusive initiative, the orchestra brings together musicians and enthusiasts of different genders, nationalities, ages, and levels of experience. Through regular weekly rehearsals, participants have the opportunity to learn and develop their skills on traditional instruments, explore regional musical traditions, and experience the cultural heritage of Macedonia and the Balkans through collective music-making and dance. The orchestra represents a unique initiative in Europe, bringing the practice and learning of Macedonian traditional music and dance into a contemporary, multicultural Viennese context. The Name
The name "Aleksandar" refers to Alexander the Great, one of the world most prominent historical figures associated with Macedonia and a figure often connected with the idea of building bridges of cultural exchange and cosmopolitanism. The name was chosen through community feedback and reflects the orchestra’s commitment to shared cultural heritage, openness, and musical exchange. Mission & Vision
Orchestra Aleksandar is committed to researching, practicing, and passing on the rich traditions of Macedonian and Balkan music and dance as practised in the Viennese diaspora. We understand traditional music and dance not only as artistic and cultural heritage, but also as living, evolving practices that can foster social connection, well-being, intercultural dialogue, and a sense of belonging. The orchestra embraces cultural diversity and stands for an understanding of music and dance that transcends national, gender, and social boundaries. Our aim is to create a space where traditions can be experienced, shared, and reinterpreted through meaningful encounters between people and cultures. Music belongs to everyone — beyond borders, beyond gender, beyond labels.
