Some wise words by historian Katja Hoyer in The Guardian. I also found residents in East Germany feel they have been overlooked and left behind by Central Government since reunification.

If the leading parties don’t take a stance and open a constructive dialogue on hard issues, more voters will be driven to support either the far-left or far-right. Lessons can be learned from these two regional elections by Germans and the rest of the world.

The AfD under Björn Höcke has won a so-called blocking minority in the Thuringian state election with around 33% of the vote, depending on the poll. The party also came close second in Saxony.
