To mark the last day of term in Austria, we held a MyGroove workshop for 800 pupils. A little improvisation based on Steve Reich’s ‘Drumming’ turned into a cascade of wrist strokes.

We practise this every day in the MyGroove Technique Deep Dive. It keeps us fit! 🥁

When you play alongside colleagues who adopt the same approach to playing, there can be moments when a drum ensemble sounds like a perfectly well-oiled ‘machine’. We managed to achieve that here at times. The flow – that unique moment when everything really clicks – was there.

In this clip, we’ve played a few bongo solos for you.

We’ve been taking a closer look at the technical combinations used here over the last few years whilst studying.

Wrist strokes, up-and-down strokes combined with double strokes are our techniques of choice here!

While producing for Austrian Broadcasting Station ORF at University Mozarteum Salzburg we did a short improvisation over Steve Reichs “Drumming” with some funny 4-bars Soli 🥁

It’s interesting to hear how the same solo sounds when played using different techniques.

Today I had a fantastic technical deep-dive session with the Berlin Philharmonic’s timpanist, Vincent Vogel! 🥁 And the highlight tonight was our Instagram Livestream, the G3 Drum Summit, with Drum-Legend Thomas Lang

And what can I say – by the end, we’d even tackled Exercise 1400! The very last exercise in the entire Academy in the MyGroove App 📲

And as you can see: we gave it our all!

Vincent has now set himself the goal of playing all 1,400 exercises to perfection. And then we’ll meet up soon for the final ‘showdown’ 🔜🥁

With a few highlights coming up – the Red Bull Athletes Superband, the G3 Drum Summit (12 May, live on Instagram) featuring Vincent Vogel (Berlin Philharmonic) and Thomas Lang (all-time drum legend) – I’ve decided to focus on finger stroke rolls this time 🥁

Important: Always practise with both hands as a starting point. Because in a concert, you need maximum flexibility and to be able to play these skills from any direction. 4-stroke, 7-stroke and 13-stroke rolls at a fairly brisk tempo!

Come on, drummers! Let’s get practising!
