A Tirolean Fairytale
Once upon a time in a town far far away, a brilliant man called Nico Zacek wished for a different freeski format, and set up a series of ground-breaking events, of which 'Nine Queens' was held today.
For his girls he build a mighty castle, with walls made of snow, it was quite a hassle. But rather then helpless mädels waiting for their savior, for a full week the castle was inhabited by talented, powerful and stylish queens on their best behaviour.
The sixt edition of Nine Queens in Serfaus consisted of 15 snowboarding- and 12 skiing ladies training together at the immense multi-kicker chateau with jib-garden, pushing the limits of female riding.
After a week of filming, stomping tricks and seeking thrills, it was time for the queens to break out of the castle and show their skills. In a Big Air competition, for the whole world to be seen, it was time to define the reigning queen.
All this training and fotoshooting together ended with a very relaxed and friendly competition day under the Austrian sun. All throughout the day the queens were sincerely supportive to one another, putting on a great show while cheering and making fun. And that's perhaps the biggest achievement of the organizers. It's one thing to build a gigantic castle out of snow, but to create an atmosphere where competitors are smiling, crashing is ok and even dancing to Justin Bieber is allowed, then you've created a format in which athletes can grow.
And they all lived happily ever after. The end.
