In times of unlimited neo-liberalism, profit maximisation seems to be more important than the interpersonal relationships that were once at the core of our society. Impersonal shopping centers, mushrooming on the outskirts of towns, are visible proof for this negative tendency. Empty shop windows have become a familiar sight in many small towns. The village of Attersee is no exception to this social development. Changes in the way we work, use our leisure time and consume goods have made many old established businesses obsolete and created abandoned village centers. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Attersee was a destination of mass tourism with a vibrating town center that was home to small businesses, craft shops, administrative buildings and more. But those times are gone. Plans for a brighter future were discussed and developed with town citizens in the course of the local Agenda 21 meetings. The art project ATTERSEE PERSPECTIVES is based on the idea of using the public space as an art gallery. Large images shielding the fronts of abandoned shops change the face of the village, they create an effect of alienation and shift people’s perception of the village. In 2011, the “Perspectives” project caused quite a stir with its concept of filling empty shop windows in the town centre of Attersee with large-scale architectural photography by Edith Maul-Röder. This year we will see a second round of artistic stimulation with a creative approach to the topic of emptiness. Internationally renowned, multiple award-winning experimental filmmaker Siegfried A. Fruhauf was selected from among ten applicants to participate in the project this time. His work, which was specially created for this occasion, plays with the empty space in an intelligent and yet sensual way.
