¿Cómo se pinta la historia de una ciudad?

Para Escondido Roots, junto a Gloria Rocha y jóvenes de Escondido, buscamos en fotografías, relatos y recuerdos las huellas de su pasado agrícola.

Viñedos, campos abiertos, agua, negocios y escenas de una ciudad en crecimiento fueron apareciendo en los talleres y dando forma a la obra.

Todo lo que la comunidad compartió terminó convirtiéndose en una misma imagen. 🌿

How do you paint the story of a city?

For Escondido Roots, together with Gloria Favela Rocha and young people from Escondido, we searched through photographs, stories, and memories for traces of the city's agricultural past.

Vineyards, open fields, water, businesses, and scenes of a growing city emerged during the workshops, shaping the artwork.

Everything the community shared came together to form a single image. 🌿

Muy contento con la entrevista que me hicieron para C5N, una crónica muy atenta y humana, alrededor de mi historia con el arte urbano y público. Desde el primer mural que hicimos en mi casa, de la tapa de un disco de King Crimson, hasta los viajes por el mundo, pasando por el laboratorio cultural que fundamos junto a colegas en una casa que se iba a demoler, y la posterior decisión de la creación compartida con otros, como filosofía de vida.

Gracias y Malu, estos momentos son de esos que me confirman el porqué de todo; y gracias también a mis colaboradores, a los que confían en mi trabajo y hacen posible que viva de lo que amo.

I’m really happy with the interview I did for C5N—a thoughtful, human story about my journey with urban and public art. It covers everything from the first mural we painted at my home—featuring a King Crimson album cover—to my travels around the world, the cultural lab we founded with colleagues in a house slated for demolition, and the subsequent decision to embrace collaborative creation as a way of life. Thank you, C5N and María Laura Salvattiera; moments like these reaffirm the reason behind it all.

Después de tantos meses de trabajo, llegó el momento más esperado: compartir The Garner con la comunidad.

La inauguración reunió a vecinos, representantes de la Comisión de Arte Público de Fort Wayne y a la alcaldesa Sharon Tucker, quien destacó el valor del arte público como una forma de fortalecer los barrios y generar espacios de encuentro.

Quiero agradecer especialmente a todas las personas que hicieron posible este proyecto y acompañaron el proceso: al equipo de la Ciudad de Fort Wayne y de la Public Art Commission, y especialmente a Nate, Chad, Bryant, Cary y Delfi por todo el apoyo y la generosidad durante estos meses.

Y gracias a la comunidad de Harvester por recibir esta obra y hacerla parte de su barrio.

Lo más emocionante fue verla habitada desde el primer día.
Eso es, para mí, cuando una obra realmente empieza. ❤️

After so many months of work, the moment we had all been waiting for finally arrived: sharing *The Garner* with the community.

The unveiling brought together neighbors, representatives from the Fort Wayne Public Art Commission, and Mayor Sharon Tucker, who highlighted the value of public art in strengthening neighborhoods and creating spaces for people to come together.

I want to extend a special thank you to everyone who made this project possible and supported the process: the teams from the City of Fort Wayne and the Public Art Commission—and especially Nate, Chad, Bryant, Cary, and Delfi—for all their support and generosity over these past months.

And thank you to the Harvester community for embracing this artwork and making it a part of your neighborhood.

The most exciting part was seeing it come to life with people right from day one.
For me, that is when a work of art truly begins. ❤️

Después de más de un año de trabajo, investigación, diseño y fabricación, finalmente pude ver The Garner en el lugar para el que fue creada: Rea Park, en el barrio Harvester.

La estructura combina algo de torre y algo de árbol. Para mí, representa ese punto de encuentro entre la historia industrial del barrio y todo lo que está empezando a crecer hacia adelante.

Verla instalada y compartida con la comunidad fue un momento muy especial de este proyecto.
¿Qué es lo primero que les transmite esta obra?

After more than a year of work, research, design, and fabrication, I finally got to see The Garner in the very place it was created for: Rea Park, in the Harvester neighborhood.

The structure combines elements of both a tower and a tree. To me, it represents the meeting point between the neighborhood's industrial history and everything that is beginning to grow foward the future.

Seeing it installed and shared with the community was a truly special moment in this project.
What is the first impression this work gives you?

Después de meses de diseño y desarrollo, llegó el momento de convertir las ideas en estructuras reales.

The Garner fue un desafío completamente nuevo para mí: una instalación de gran escala, modular y geométrica, construida con materiales y procesos que nunca había utilizado de esta manera.

¿Les gusta ver todo lo que sucede detrás de una obra antes de llegar al resultado final?

After months of design and development, the time came to turn ideas into real structures.

"The Garner" was a completely new challenge for me: a large-scale, modular, and geometric installation, built using materials and processes I had never employed in this way.

Do you enjoy seeing everything that goes on behind the scenes of a work before the final result is achieved?

Este proyecto empezó mucho antes de que existieran los planos, los materiales o la estructura final.

En octubre de 2025 viajé a Fort Wayne, Indiana, para recorrer el barrio Harvester y conocer a las personas que viven allí. Durante esos días escuché historias sobre la antigua fábrica que dio identidad al lugar durante generaciones y sobre cómo su cierre transformó profundamente la vida del barrio.

Muchas de las conversaciones que tuve con vecinos terminaron formando parte de la obra.

Uno de los momentos más especiales fue registrar las huellas de las manos de la comunidad, que hoy forman parte de la instalación como una manera de dejar presente a quienes construyen la identidad de este lugar todos los días.

The Garner habla del pasado industrial del barrio, pero también de las personas que siguen imaginando su futuro.

This project began long before the blueprints, materials, or final structure existed.

In October 2025, I traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to tour the Harvester neighborhood and meet the people who live there. During my visit, I heard stories about the old factory that defined the area for generations and about how its closure profoundly transformed life in the neighborhood.

Many of the conversations I had with residents ended up becoming part of the artwork.

One of the most special moments was capturing the handprints of the community members; these now form part of the installation, serving as a way to honor those who shape the neighborhood's identity every day.

The Garner speaks to the neighborhood's industrial past, but also to the people who continue imagining its future.

🏔️ Parece Mentira

Después de tres años de trabajo, la instalación encontró su lugar en el Ledges Event Center, en Coalville, Utah.
La obra está formada por grandes módulos metálicos inspirados en las formaciones rocosas de la región y pensados para ser recorridos, habitados y explorados.

También incorpora símbolos magnéticos creados junto a la comunidad, que pueden moverse libremente para construir nuevas historias sobre la pieza.
Para mí este proyecto significó mucho más que una nueva obra.

Fue la primera vez explorando el lenguaje de la instalación y la escultura pública, trabajando con materiales y procesos completamente distintos a los que venía desarrollando hasta ahora.

Siento que abrió un camino nuevo que todavía tengo muchas ganas de seguir explorando.

🏔️ It Seems Unreal

After three years of work, the installation found its home at the Ledges Event Center in Coalville, Utah.
The piece consists of large metal modules inspired by the region's rock formations, designed to be walked through, inhabited, and explored.

It also incorporates magnetic symbols created in collaboration with the community; these can be moved freely to build new stories around the artwork.

For me, this project meant much more than just a new piece of art.

It was my first time exploring the language of installation art and public sculpture, working with materials and processes completely different from those I had used previously.

I feel it opened up a new path that I am still very eager to continue exploring.

🏔️ Parece Mentira

Volver tres años seguidos a la misma región de Utah fue una experiencia muy especial.
La primera vez viajé para pintar un mural comunitario en Hoytsville. Después regresé dos años más para desarrollar Parece Mentira.

Cada viaje me permitió conocer un poco más este lugar.

Hay valles entre montañas, senderos increíbles para hacer trekking, lagos, diques y parques que parecen irreales, como Mirror Lake, en el bosque nacional Uinta-Wasatch-Cache. También nos hospedamos en un rancho en el valle de Oakley, rodeados de caballos y naturaleza.

Con el tiempo dejé de sentir que estaba viajando para hacer una obra.

Sentí que estaba conociendo un territorio que, de alguna manera, también terminó formando parte de mí.

🏔️ It Seems Unreal

Returning to the same region of Utah for three consecutive years was a truly special experience.
The first time, I traveled there to paint a community mural in Hoytsville. I later returned for two more years to develop It Seems Unreal.

Each trip allowed me to get to know this place a little better.

There are valleys nestled between mountains, incredible hiking trails, and lakes, reservoirs, and parks that look almost unreal—like Mirror Lake in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. We also stayed at a ranch in Oakley Valley, surrounded by horses and nature.

Over time, I stopped feeling like I was traveling simply to create a work of art.

I felt like I was getting to know a landscape that, in a way, ended up becoming a part of me, too.

🏔️ Parece Mentira

Una parte fundamental de esta instalación nació alrededor de una mesa.

Durante el proyecto trabajamos junto a una arqueóloga del estado de Utah y con Lucy Washakie, integrante de la comunidad Eastern Shoshone, para conocer el significado de los petroglifos presentes en esta región desde la cultura Fremont.

Después organizamos talleres abiertos con vecinos de Coalville para imaginar cuáles podrían ser los símbolos de la comunidad actual.

Esos dibujos se transformaron en imanes que hoy forman parte de la instalación y pueden moverse libremente, permitiendo que cada persona cree nuevas combinaciones y nuevos relatos.

Me gusta pensar que la participación de la comunidad no terminó el día del taller. Sigue ocurriendo cada vez que alguien interactúa con la obra.

🏔️ It Seems Unreal

A fundamental part of this installation was born around a table.

During the project, we worked alongside an archaeologist from the State of Utah and Lucy Washakie, a member of the Eastern Shoshone community, to understand the significance of the petroglyphs in this region—which date back to the Fremont culture.

We then organized open workshops with Coalville residents to envision what symbols might represent the current community.

Those drawings were transformed into magnets that are now part of the installation; they can be moved freely, allowing each person to create new combinations and new stories.

I like to think that community participation didn’t end on the day of the workshop. It continues to happen every time someone interacts with the artwork.
