The record-breaking sale of Matt Kane's "Right Place & Right Time" on Async.art marks the first time a piece has sold for more than $100,000 in cryptoart movement. A historical sale for an art-based non-fungible token (NFT), it signals the emerging market is gaining traction despite uncertain economic times.

The artwork is a one-of-a-kind programmable piece that generates a new image each day. Made of 24 Layers synchronized with Bitcoin's price volatility from the previous 24 hours, it was created exclusively on Async Art.

With the patronage of Token Angels, the artwork's collector, the artist gained an unique opportunity to experiment: sharing revenue with a collector in the form of subsequent minted variations of the artwork. Through volatility.art, Matt Kane will periodically produce and sell a digital art NFT to represent a day in the life of Bitcoin. This NFT will also grant its owner the right to purchase a physical print.

In 2019, the Whitney Museum of American Art revealed an innovative art project — Public Key/Private Key — created by artists Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. The work addresses art ownership and the future of patronage by distributing “donor credits” through Monograph, a blockchain-powered artwork title registry and marketplace launched by Kevin in 2014.

As part of Public Key/Private Key, the artists lodged a 16mm film of the same name, a metal cannister and blockchain key with the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The work was backed by blockchain-based cryptographic certificates, allowing up to 50 people to be credited as the “donor of record” of the work. On this occasion, no money changed hands: members of the public were asked to submit an essay to the artists, who made the final selection. For a six-month period, donors were allowed to trade their certificates — with changes registered on the Ethereum blockchain. At that point, the list was frozen, and the final names credited by the museum as the work’s donors. Could this provide a model for future museum patronage?

Moderator Dinis Guarda, Founder & CEO Ztudium will be joined by Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, multimédia artists behind the project, Christiane Paul, adjunct curator of digital art for the Whitney Museum of American Art, Aaron Wright, Founder OpenLaw, behind the creation of smart contracts for each donor as part of the Public key/ Private Key project) and lastly one of the 50 donors, Anne Bracegirdle, Senior Director PaceX to discuss this Public Key/ Private Key project, art ownership and the role of donors in the mission of museums to conserve cultural objects. Could the ideas raised by this project help museums encourage and recognize the donations of a much wider spectrum of society than is currently the case?

Join us this Friday at 14:00 UTC on http://bit.ly/3byM9JP to learn more about the Whitney Museum’s new blockchain initiative.

Can blockchain technology stimulate the market for historically difficult-to-sell digital work, including video? Will galleries and collectors accept digital logs detailing prices and ownership history, or will traditional anonymity be maintained? Who will be accepted as verifiers of authenticity? Will the use of blockchain encourage a new generation of digital forgers? Do the art market, museums and the technology sector understand each other well enough to overcome these hurdles?

Join moderator Frédéric de Senarclens, Founder ArtMarketGuru tomorrow on Talking Blockchain: Promises VS Pitfalls. He will discuss digital art, blockchain and blue-chip galleries and the pros and cons of using the technology with Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt, Co-Founder Blockchain.art (Former Director Vienna Contemporary), Adam Lindemann, Collector, Investors & Founder Venus Over Manhattan, Johann König, Founder König Galerie and Alfred Weidinger, New Scientific Director Upper Austrian State Museum.

UNFOLD ART XCHANGE

THE ORIGINS OF UNFOLD

UNFOLD as a name is inspired by the ideas conveyed in the evocative words 'Emerge' and 'Reveal'. Our ambition is to offer unprecedented access to a larger, diverse and inclusive market that draws its inspiration from fast developing areas of the world outside the hegemonic centres.

'Emerge' refers to the association of five major emerging national economies expressed by the acronym BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
